Beginning in fourth grade and continuing in fifth grade and beyond, students may elect to study a ban instrument or a string instrument. This includes instruments such as flute, clarinet, saxophone, trumpet, trombone, horn, percussion, violin, viola, cello, and others. Instruction begins in small groups and when basic skills are mastered the small groups are combined to form the school band and orchestra.
The school band and orchestra will give several performances each year. As students mature musically they will learn to perform many different styles of instrumental music including classical, jazz and familiar popular and folk songs. They will also have the opportunity to perform solo and in small ensembles, as appropriate.
Students will receive information about the program at the beginning of forth grade. The instrumental music teachers will help the students select instruments and instruction begins in mid October. In most cases students will need to supply their own instrument and supplies. Instruments are generally rented through a local music store.
Support and encouragement form parents in important for the child’s progress. The students who are most successful with instrumental music study are those who have self-discipline, are goal-oriented and develop a routine of daily home practice.
